COVID-19 Protocols:

A couple of things to put your mind at ease as you start to come back into the classroom setting:

LIFEGUARD COURSES:

Cleaning protocols have been increased
Equipment will be individualized as much as possible (mannequins, AED trainers, etc.)
Due to the nature of the Lifeguarding courses, there will be minimal contact required with other participants.
- For Lifeguard/Lifesaving procedures (Spinals, Unresponsive, etc) we will be using submersible mannequins where possible
- For physical standards required to be done on another person we will be teaching protocols to minimize risk - We will be switching to mannequins as soon as we are on the pool deck
All instructors are trained in updated COVID protocols

FIRST AID COURSES:

You will be set up with your own personal learning station (2m distance from the other stations)
Cleaning protocols have been increased
Equipment will not be shared amongst participants
Any skills involving partner work will be minimized, but when that is not possible, masks and gloves will be required to be worn.

Lifeguard Courses

Bronze Cross Challenge

Description:

The Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross Challenge Course is designed for individuals who have previously attempted the Bronze Cross exam within the last six months but did not pass, as well as those who hold an equivalent lifesaving or lifeguarding certification from another country and wish to earn Canadian certification. This 4-hour assessment-based course allows experienced candidates to demonstrate their proficiency in Bronze Cross skills without completing the full-length program. Participants will be evaluated on advanced water rescue techniques, endurance and fitness standards, teamwork in aquatic emergencies, spinal injury management, and CPR and first aid application in Assistant Lifeguard situations. This is a testing-only course, and no instruction will be provided.

**Successful completion of this course is worth TWO (2) Grade 11 Credits**

Lifesaving Society overview and training programs
Non-fatal drowning: follow-up care and treatment of a conscious victim
Shallow water blackout: causes and prevention
Assistant lifeguard roles and responsibilities
Effective communication with patrons, victims, coworkers, supervisors, and emergency personnel
Two-rescuer removals
Surface dives and underwater swims
Team search
Two-rescuer drowning resuscitation
Spinal injury management
Object recovery and transport
Rescue drill
Endurance challenge (400-meter swim within 11 minutes)
Safety supervision scanning
Two-person rescue
Assistant lifeguard situations

Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion certification (need not be current), Previous Attempt at Bronze Cross within the last 6 months OR Previous Lifeguard Experience from another Country
